About Sudo Menu
Sudo Menu started with a simple observation: most digital menus are built for fast, cheap internet, while many diners in Ethiopia pay for every megabyte. We set out to build a menu that opens quickly on a basic Android phone over a weak connection, reads naturally in Amharic and English, and understands local habits such as fasting days, macchiato orders and paying with Telebirr.
What we do
Cafes and restaurants use Sudo Menu to publish their menu, put a QR code on every table and, if they wish, take orders from guests' phones and send them straight to the kitchen. Our directory lists venues that use the platform, and our guide explains Ethiopian food, coffee and dining customs for guests, and practical topics for venue owners.
How we work
- Light pages. A typical menu page is a few kilobytes, smaller than a single photo.
- Two languages, always. Every part of the menu and the staff app is in Amharic and English.
- Fair prices. Prices and bills are calculated on our servers from the venue's published menu, so what the guest sees is what the venue charges.
- Free for venues. We are supported by clearly labelled advertising, placed so it never gets in the way of ordering or paying.
